Bay to Breakers Guide, 2012

< Continued from page 1

THE RACE COURSE
Begins in the Embarcadero area fronting San Francisco Bay and ends on the Great Highway alongside the Pacific Ocean's breakers. Most of the 7.46 miles (12 kilometers) are flat, with the notable exception of Hayes Street's five-block hill. After that, it's generally an easy coast to and through Golden Gate Park and to the finish line.

THE STARTING LINE: 7-8 AM
Registered runners are to go to separate corrals for staggered starting times at 7 am (for the swift Kenyans and other seeded and "sub-seeded" runners who have pre-submitted verification of their qualifying times), 7:30-7:45 am, and 7:45-8 am.

Race organizers suggest arriving in the area 30 minutes before your start time.

COSTUME CONTEST
At the Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park, 8-11 am
For a chance to win a Zazzle shopping spree, report to the Conservatory of Flowers (which is around mile 4 of the B2B route). There are categories for individual and group costumes.

BEST PLACES TO WATCH BAY TO BREAKERS
  • The bottom of Hayes Street Hill—Stand back and look up at a clump of sweaty humanity toiling up the hill.
  • Alamo Square facing Hayes Street—Having conquered the hill, the runners are grinning.
  • Along the Panhandle
  • In front of the Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park
  • At the finish line on the Great Highway—Especiallyif you want to catch record-holders and record-breakers.

POST-RACE FESTIVAL: THE FINAL MILE
Along Martin Luther King Dr. between the Great Highway and Chain of Lakes Dr./41st Ave., at 8:30 am-1 pm.
What used to be the Footstock festival in Speedway Meadows is now the Final Mile and transplanted closer to the finish line.

Those who paid for above-basic registration can get their T-shirts. Here's where to find your friends and roam among food purveyors, vendors and exhibits. Free and open to the public.

TRANSPORTATION: To & From Bay to Breakers

Bauer's Shuttles
  • Round-trip ($22):  At 5:30 am, leaves from park and ride lots in Emeryville, Millbrae and Mill Valley to the start line.  The return shuttle leaves the Final Mile (on Martin Luther King Dr.) at 12 pm.
  • One-way ($10-14): From 8:30 am-2 pm, leaves from the Final Mile to the start line, to the Daly City BART station, and to the 22nd Street Caltrain Station.

SFMTA (Muni) Special Event Shuttle
A Special Events Muni sticker ($12) is valid for all Muni Special Event Shuttle, express and local services on race day from 4:45 am until 5 pm, except cable cars. Note that Muni Fastpasses and Clipper cards are not valid for riding on Muni Special Event Shuttles. Post-race, board the Muni Special Event Shuttle at Chain of Lakes Dr. near Fulton St. and 43rd Ave.

Embarcadero Parking
Show your race bib to get a special $10 rate on race day at the AMPCO System Parking in the four Embarcadero Centers.

Bay to Breakers Free Ride & Afterparty
Every 30 minutes from 10:30 am until 2:30 pm, buses will pick up runners at Fulton and Masonic and at Fulton and Stanyan and transport them to The Republic, 3213 Scott St. (at Divisadero), San Francisco 94123. That's the site of the Pinchit B2B Afterparty (10:30 am-8 pm), and no surprise, the shuttle service is courtesy of Pinchit and SideCar. Advance RSVP is required for the ride (which also allows free entry to the afterparty), and space on the buses is first-come, first-served.
