Washington, D.C., is the seat of the United States' government, and a popular place to see monuments, museums and political buildings, including the Capital and the White House. Many of D.C.'s downtown hotels have sky-high prices, so most tourists have to find a hotel in the suburbs and commute via the Metrorail. However, some hotels in downtown Washington do have reasonable rates, which allows more money for attractions and restaurants.

    The District Hotel

    • As of fall 2010, room rates at the District Hotel begin at $99 per night, which includes a room with a double bed. Opened since 1920, this budget hotel is located centrally between the Logan Circle and Hahnemann Memorial roundabouts. The entrance to the hotel features a canopied walkway, much like a Manhattan apartment building, while the lobby area features contemporary furniture pieces and decor. The hotel has 58 guest rooms. Guided tours of Washington can be arranged by the hotel's front desk, and tour buses pick up guests at the front entrance.

Nearby dining options include the Asian-influenced Thaitanic, and the trendy Churchkey, which serves American cuisine every night. Both restaurants are on 14th Street. Live theatrical performances are available at the Studio Theater on the corner of P Street and 14th Street, within five minutes of the hotel.

    Capitol Skyline Hotel

    • The Capitol Skyline Hotel is on the southern edge of downtown Washington, and room rates start at $169 per night, as of fall 2010. This room rate also includes breakfast. This independently-owned hotel also features a large outdoor swimming pool, gift shop and an on-site restaurant, Lapidus. The restaurant features contemporary fixtures and art in the dining room, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week. The hotel was originally designed by famed architect, Morris Lapidus, and the lobby area features modern-style furniture pieces. Some of the guest rooms offer views of the Capital building, while others overlook the hotel's swimming pool.

The museums and monuments at the Washington Mall are a five-minute drive north of the hotel. The hotel is a five-minute walk from the Navy Yard and Waterfront-SEU Metrorail transit stations, which offer quick access to different areas of the city. Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals baseball team, is within 10 minutes of the hotel.

    Allen Lee Hotel

    • Situated in the heart of George Washington University, the Allen Lee Hotel provides room rates at $94 per night, as of fall 2010. The rooms with these prices have shared bathrooms. The lowest price for guests rooms with en suite bathrooms is $104 per night. The hotel provides guests with Citikey devices, which serve as digital guides that help guests navigate their way through the Washington D.C. area.

The hotel is withing walking distance of restaurants and shops in the Foggy Bottom district, which is Washington D.C.'s hectic business district. The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts is only a five-minute walk from the hotel; this performing arts center hosts live theatrical and dance shows throughout the year. Jogging and bicycling opportunities are available on the Rock Creek Park trail, which runs parallel to the Potomac River. The trail is a five-minute drive west of the hotel.

    Windsor Inn

    • The Windsor Inn is in the heart of downtown Washington's Dupont Circle area, and provides room rates as low as $129 per night, as of fall 2010. This hotel was built in 1913 as a luxury apartment complex, and the exterior of the hotel resembles a European-style boutique hotel. Mini-suite guest units are available, and they have living room areas with sofas. Pets under 20 pounds may stay in the basement rooms for an additional fee. The lobby area hosts a wine hour on evenings from Monday through Friday.

Popular clubs and restaurants in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, including Cobalt and Local 16, are within walking distance of the hotel. The Dupont Circle Metrorail station and circular park are only a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Historical attractions, such as Woodrow Wilson's House and the Dumbarton House, are less than 10 minutes driving distance from the hotel. The hotel can arrange guided tours upon request.
