How to Hang a Vinyl Fence

    • 1). Dig a hole where you want to start the vinyl fence using your post hole digger. Make the hole 10 inches wide and 6 inches deeper than half of the fence's height. Depending on your kit, you may need to set terminal posts, like corner and end posts, an additional 6 inches into the ground.

    • 2). Measure the length of the first fence panel that you want to install and add the width of a single post to the measurement. Dig a second hole equal to exactly this distance from the first hole, along the path that you want the fence to take.

    • 3). Place 6 inches of gravel at the bottom of each hole. Mix together some pre-mixed concrete and water, according to the directions on the bag of concrete. Dump the concrete into one of the holes and then place the post down into the concrete. Push down until the post reaches the bottom of the hole.

    • 4). Place a level on the side of the post and adjust it until it is level and has one side directly facing the other hole. Connect one end of a long 2-by-4-inch board to the top of the post with a clamp so that the board runs diagonally to the ground. Do the same thing with a second 2-by-4 on an adjacent face of the post from the first one. Drive wood stakes into the ground where the 2-by-4s end, recheck the post for plumbness, and then drive screws through the 2-by-4s and into the stakes. This brace system will keep the posts level until the concrete cures.

    • 5). Repeat this process with the second post. Let the concrete dry for 24 hours before you continue. You can dig and install fence posts, in the same manner, for the rest of the fence during this time, just be sure to use a different fence panel for each measurement and to lay the fence panel next to the space where you will install it.

    • 6). Hold a fence panel up between the two posts. Elevate the panel so it is an inch off of the ground. Have someone hold it in place while you mark where the underside of each panel rail meets the fence posts. Draw one line on the post for each rail, then remove the fence panel.

    • 7). Align the bottom of one of the fence brackets that came with the vinyl fence kit with one of the pencil marks you made. Drive two 3/4-inch screws through the holes on the bracket and into the fence panel. Do this for every pencil mark you made.

    • 8). Pick up the fence panel and move it between the posts. Lower the panel so that the rails slide down into the brackets that you just installed. Drive two 3/4-inch screws through each side of the brackets and into each rail.

    • 9). Repeat this process for every vinyl fence panel that you are installing.
