Create a compost bin. For acidic items, such as spruce needles, an open air wood box or rubber garbage container are desirable. - 2). Collect yard and kitchen waste for composting to line the bottom of the compost bin. Low acidic items, including grass clippings, vegetable waste and tree limbs work well as an initial lining for the bin.
- 3). Add spruce needles to the compost bin. Layer the needles between other composting material. This will allow needed air flow for the decomposition process.
- 4). Sprinkle yard lime onto the compost pile. Spruce needles make the compost acidic. The lime will reduce the acidity and assist in the decomposition process.
- 5). Wet the compost. Water will assist in equalizing the amount of acid in the compost bin. After the top is damp, use a shovel to lift the compost allowing the water to drain to the lower levels of material.
