How to Install an Outdoor Outlet

    Instructions

    • 1). Find a location for your new outdoor outlet that's close to an existing indoor outlet. You'll need it to be 4 inches above the foundation and 12 to 15 inches above the ground overall.

    • 2). Cut the power to the circuit you'll be working with by flipping the breaker. Use a circuit tester at the indoor outlet to ensure that there's no juice flowing through that circuit.

    • 3). Using a screwdriver, remove the cover plate from the indoor outlet, and disconnect the outlet. Drill through the back of the outlet box, and continue through the exterior wall. If your facade is stucco or brick, you'll need a masonry bit for the job.

    • 4). Thread your exterior grade electrical cable through the hole. Leave enough slack to work with outside, but not so much that it will be difficult to tuck the cable into the new outlet box.

    • 5). Strip the insulation from the inside end of the cable, and splice white to white, black to black. Also, splice in short white and black wires to return power to the indoor outlet. Secure the connections with a wire nut.

    • 6). Reassemble the indoor outlet by sending the white wire to the silver contact and the black wire to the brass contact. Put it back together, and head outside.

    • 7). Use the needle-nose pliers to pull your cable through if it's stubborn. Thread it through the back of the outlet box, and then attach the box to the house with the included screws.

    • 8). Wire your new outlet in the same way you wired your indoor outlet. Many regions require a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) type in any areas that encounter excessive moisture. These are the outlets that have a built-in circuit breaker, and they include a reset button between the two plugs.

    • 9). Assemble the outlet box with its waterproof seal and cover.
