- 1). Put on eye protection and a dust mask. Place a piece of 80-grit sandpaper at the bottom of an electric sander. Run the sander over the surface of the table, steadily removing all the peeling finish and splinters. Repeat with 220-grit sandpaper and 360-grit sandpaper.
- 2). Wipe down the table with a tack cloth, removing all the dust from sanding. You'll now see the original finish and beauty of the table.
- 3). Dip a 3-inch nylon brush in the wood stain of your choice. Ideally, select a wood stain that has conditioning properties as well. Cover the table in a generous coat of stain. Allow it to soak 20 minutes and wipe it off. Repeat if you want a darker coat.
- 4). Rinse off the brush with a dot of detergent and warm water. Let the stain and the paintbrush dry overnight.
- 5). Dip the paintbrush into a clear polyurethane top coat and cover the table with a light coat. Allow it to dry for 24 hours and repeat with a second coat, allowing this coat to dry for 48 hours before using the table.
