- 1). Measure the area on the futon where the mattress will cover with a tape measure. Alternatively, you can take the measurement of your old futon cushion.
- 2). Lay out a 2-inch thick layer of cotton on a flat surface. Roll out a second layer of cotton of the same thickness beside and in the opposite direction of the first. Stretch both cotton layers a little to flatten them to the measured length.
- 3). Separate the Flexi (egg crate shaped) foam into two and place both with the smooth face down on the layers of cotton.
- 4). Cover the Flexi foam with another two layers of 2-inch cotton. Put on the smooth shell with the zipper end first. Guide the cushion into the shell with a flat hand. Zip the shell slowly around the cushion.
- 5). Mark with a pencil two rows of spots along the length of the cushion where the tufts will be. Make sure to distribute them equally apart and place them at equal distances from the edges.
- 6). Thread a 10-inch diamond tufting needle with an elastic thread. Push the needle into the cushion at the first marked spot and bring it up at the other end of the mark. Tie the thread and cut off the excess with a pair of scissors. Repeat this for the other tufts marked out.
