- 1). Determine if the eggs are fertilized before placing them in the incubator. This is done by candling, or holding an egg to a bright light. If the egg is fertile, the egg will appear very dark. If the egg is not fertilized, the egg will appear light and transparent. Place the fertile egg in the incubator and dispose of the unfertilized one.
- 2). Place the eggs in the incubator, turning the eggs four times a day. Wear gloves when turning the eggs to prevent oil from your hands clogging the pores of the egg, potentially killing the embryo.
- 3). Wait approximately 20 days from laying for the eggs to hatch. This will typically happen all at once. It is OK to leave the chicks in the incubator when feeding them, but it is important to lower the temperature of the incubator for the safety and comfort of the chicks. Feed them shortly after they are born.
