How to be a good Dad

The role of father in society has changed dramatically over the last 50 years, as have the pressures of being a parent. Modern dads are expected to take a more active, involved part in parenting their children. In past decades a father's position was generally one of distant disciplinarian, strength and stoicism were seen as the most important traits.

On the birth of a new child, the father would retire to the local pub and wait for news from the doctor when the baby had arrived. These days dads are expected to be versed in breathing techniques, support the laboring mother, video the event and even possibly cut the umbilical cord.

New Dads are expected to feed, dress and change nappies which was unheard of even 60 years ago, where such things were considered 'women's work'. In days gone by, a father was expected to enforce discipline and dole out punishment, present a solid, respected image to his children who were expected to rise to attention when he entered a room. Meals were expected to be served as he returned from work, wife and children seated around the table waiting. A happy meal meant father telling humorous stories about his day at work, rather than a trip to McDonalds.

To be considered a good father requires a greater commitment of leisure time than in days gone by. Coaching the kids sports teams, driving them to and from their full social lives, helping with homework and building models for school projects are just a few examples of paternal commitments.

The pressures on modern Dads are greater than ever, not only do they have to be successful bread winners providing not just a roof over the head, but all the latest technological gadgets, meals out and exotic holidays. They are also required to spend hours in the gym or other exercising activity to keep the beer gut at bay. The media present us with images of men with flawless skin, prefect hair, six pack stomachs and an all over tan, enough to make any man feel somewhat inadequate.

There is one day of the year dedicated to acknowledging the big man in our lives and thanking them for all they have done for us: Fathers day. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, so the actual date is never fixed. People celebrate the occasion by honoring their father and expressing affection for them by giving gifts, cards, flowers, chocolates and neckties.

One new way of recognizing and appreciating your dad is to send him an animated, funny Fathers Day E card. Not only will you be sending him a message of love, but also helping to limit you carbon footprint as ecards are a very environmentally friendly way of connecting with loved ones and friends.
