- 1). Close the door. Mark a line 6 inches to 12 inches above the doorknob on the interior face of the door. Use a straight edge to draw a horizontal line to the edge of the door and onto the doorjamb. This is where you will install the deadbolt.
- 2). Open the door. Measure 2 3/8 inches or 2 3/4 inches from the edge of the door on the horizontal line you just drew, and mark another small vertical line. This is called the backset--how far from the edge of the door the deadbolt hole will be drilled. Check the backset distance recommended by the manufacturer on the deadbolt packaging for the correct measurement.
- 3). Line up the template with the horizontal line you drew on the door in Step 1. The template consists of two circles. The larger one is for the deadbolt hole. It contains a vertical and horizontal dotted line. Line up the horizontal dotted line on the template with the horizontal line you drew on the door. The edge of the circle lines up with the backset line you measured in Step 2. Tape the template to the face of the door.
- 4). Fold the template around the door so the smaller circle on the template fits over the striker side of the door. The striker side of the door fits into the doorjamb, and the smaller circle on the template lines up where the latch-bolt inserts into the doorjamb. Tape the folded side of the template to the striker side of the door.
- 5). Find the large black dot at the intersection of the dotted lines in the deadbolt circle. Gouge out a bit of wood through the template on this mark using the tip of a 7/8-inch wood bit. Find another large black dot at the center of the latch bolt circle on the striker side of the door. Gouge out a small bit of wood. Remove the template and cut out the deadbolt hole and latch-bolt hole on these marks.
- 6). Locate the mark on the doorjamb you drew in Step 1. The mark is already lined up in the proper place. Drill two 7/8-inch holes with the wood bit, one right above the mark and one below it, so the mark is between the two holes. Chisel out the remaining wood between the two holes in the doorjamb to finish latch-bolt hole. Install the remainder of the deadbolt according to kit instructions.
