- 1). Choose a larger tile size. The most common tile size is 12 inches by 12 inches, but tile is available in 12 inches by 24 inches, 18 inches by 18 inches, and 24 inches by 24 inches. One of these larger tile sizes will make a room appear larger with fewer individual tiles and fewer grout lines.
- 2). Lay the tile on a diagonal. Instead of installing tile in a straight pattern, lay the tiles on an angle. The room will appear wider, especially when you use larger tiles.
- 3). Make a room feel longer by using a rectangular tile, such as 6- by 12-inch or 12- by 24 inch; lay the tile straight with the longer side of the time against the longest side of the room. The tiles will make the room appear longer when standing at one end looking to the other end.
- 4). Use two colors on a diagonal. Create width and visual space by staggering two different color tiles on a 45-degree diagonal. This will widen the room by visually creating space from one color to the next.
