Your safari holiday advice, for a stress free holiday

It was a tough job but I decided to pack my bags and head off to Africa in search of the most special African experiences. Here are some of my insider tips to help you prepare for your safari holidays.

One of the major concerns that travellers face when they think of travelling to Africa is the threat of malaria with very few knowing first hand which parts of Africa are impacted by the disease, as not every part of Africa is affected by Africa. For example, most parts of South Africa are malaria free which means that tourists visiting the area don't have to take the anti-malaria tablets, the only acceptations in this region is the Kruger area and the northern KZN, Southern Namibia and Botswana are also malaria free zones. Places which carry a high risk of malaria are Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Zanzibar; these are all regions where anti malaria tablets must be taken before you travel to avoid contracting malaria.

When packing your clothing for your safari holiday it is important that you pack a few key items. Firstly you need to pack warm clothing for the early morning safaris as it can get rather chilly. For your general clothing during the day please try and wear clothes which blend in and won't cause too much attention, try and wear colours such as greens, khaki, browns, beige and neutral colours as the animals can spot you in bright coloured clothing and they will pay you closer attention.

For the best photographs I would advise bringing with you a wide range of lenses for your camera as sometimes you will be able to get close enough to the animals without having to use a long lens, whereas other times it will be required. From my time on safari I would also advise that you take with you a digital camera to keep in your pocket for when you're not carrying your SLR camera around as you never know when something incredible may pop up.

Wearing long sleeved clothing is important during the evening to avoid being bitten by insects, please also remember to apply insect repellent at least two times a day in order to fend off the insects.

The best time to go on safari depends upon your destination. The best time to visit Tanzania on safari is during the dry season, with June and October being of particular highlight as this is when the Great migration occurs. Between June and August are the best time to visit South Africa as this is during the dry season when the bush is less dense, which means that animals are easier to spot.

I must stress that Africa is a great place to visit no matter what time of year it is, it just depends upon what it is that you wish to see and the type of things that you want to do whilst you're on your safari holidays.
