Moon gardens are mystical landscapes composed of white and silver flowers and blossoms that open up or become more fragrant after the sun sets. You can create a moon garden in your backyard to enjoy at night using plants with white flowers. Of course you can also add white blossoms to your day time flower bed to contrast with red, yellow, blue, purple and other hues. Whatever you decide, a variety of plants exist that create white blooms of different shapes, sizes and textures.

White lilies, also called Madonna lilies (Lilium candidum), are bulb plants that bloom in the summer. They produce gorgeous trumpet-shaped white blossoms with six petals each. White lilies may grow up to 45 inches tall. Plant bulbs in the fall in well-drained soil and in an area that receives full sun. White lilies are hardy from zone 5 to 10. In zone 5 and 6, plants must be surrounded by mulch for protection against frost. Find your plant hardiness zone on the The United States National Arboretum website.

Moon flower (Ipomoea alba) is an annual vine that you can allow to climb a trellis or fence or cover the ground in a section of your flower bed. Thick green stalks branch out from large, heart-shaped leaves. The tip of the stalks have white flower buds that open up at dusk to produce a trumpet-shaped, five-petaled flower. Moon flowers have a diameter of approximately 6 inches and are very fragrant - their aroma increases at night. Plant moon flower seeds in well-drained soil and in an area that receives full or partial sun. This species is hardy from zones 9 to 11.

    Zinnias

    • Zinnias, members of the sunflower family, come in a variety of colors and shapes, and there are several white varieties. You can plant zinnias in flower beds, pots and border gardens; they are also commonly added to flower bouquets. Narrowlead zinnias (Zinnia angustifolia) look like daisies and come in white, orange, pink, red and other colors. The white cultivar's flowers are composed of a multitude of white petals radially arranged around a yellow center. Zinnia Elegance 'Purity White' blossoms are spherical and composed of tiered layers of white petals with a green center. Talk to your local nursery to find out the hardiness level of the zinnia plant you are considering. It depends on the species of Zinnia whether it is an annual or a perennial.
