- Combination safes consist of a numbered dial and a locking mechanism that holds the door of the safe closed. The dial attaches to a spindle located on the inside of the lock. The spindle holds three or more wheels. Located above the wheels is a latch, also known as a fence. The fence holds the locking mechanism in place.
- The number of wheels each lock contains depends on the amount of numbers needed to open the lock. If the lock is a three-number combination safe, the inside of the lock will have three wheels. Each number of the combination corresponds to one of the wheels inside the lock. The wheels contain several small notches and one deep notch.
- As you turn the dial to the first number of the combination, the corresponding wheel's deepest notch fits into the fence. The same happens with the other combination numbers. Once you enter the entire combination and all of the deep notches are in place, the fence releases and allows the safe to open.
