- 1). Rent a scaffolding. You will be working up high, and it is hard and dangerous climbing up and down a ladder. The scaffold is necessary if you are replacing the fascia over the perimeter of the house.
- 2). Lay out the boards you are going to use on saw horses. Paint both sides with a mildew-resistant primer to help minimize any future water damage. Allow them to dry.
- 3). Pull up the main channel of the gutter system if it is on a mounting and set it aside. Otherwise, pry out the metal spikes affixing it to the wood and remove the entire gutter. Use pry bars to pull off the fascia where it attaches to the eave. Use a utility knife if it is caulked to trim around the fascia and release it. Discard the old boards.
- 4). Measure the area and measure again. Mark the dimension on the board and cut it to fit. Push the board under the roof edge and up against the rafter edge. Nail the board into place using the rafter edges as your anchor. Continue to cut pieces and mount them. Keep each piece right up against its neighbor to avoid gaps.
- 5). Use caulking and draw a thin bead between each joined board. Use a finger wrapped in a wet rag to smooth it. Run a bead along the interior edge where it joins the rafters. Smooth this out. Seal any other areas that are open
- 6). Allow the silicone to dry for at least an hour. Paint the boards to match your trim. After they have completely dried, reassemble the gutter. Make a commitment to keep it clean so the fascia will last longer.
