Speakeasy pubs have been popping up around the country in all shapes and sizes. They are not unusual in big cities, but finding one in Rochester, Minnesota, was a bit unexpected. The Doggery, a slang word once used to refer to a speakeasy, is one of the highlights in the revitalization of this city, which has been known mainly as the home of Mayo Clinic.
Getting In
Unlike some 1920s Prohibition era speakeasy style bars, there’s no secret code or vague text messages passed around to get inside The Doggery in Rochester.
It’s all by word of mouth for this Minnesota pub and those words have been positive enough that the place can fill up without a sign outside, advertising, or even a website. (They do have a Facebook page.)
Once inside, you’ll see just how unique this place is. It’s filled with eclectic wood and antiques, but the comfortable couches and warm atmosphere will relax you immediately.
Cocktails
The drinks are what The Doggery in Rochester is all about. In sticking with the speakeasy reputation, you’ll find a throwback to the classic drinks, with a bit of imagination added in. Do expect your drinks to take some time to be handcrafted. You will also be paying top dollar for them in comparison with the rest of the neighborhood, but that’s what craft cocktails are about – fresh ingredients made with thought just for you.
The cocktail menu is pretty interesting and includes things such as the Calabaza (Anjeo Tequila, butternut squash, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon) and the Old Fool (bourbon, turbinado, bitters, and orange).
If you don’t see something you like, speak up. The bartender will be more than happy to mix up something based on your favorite flavors. If it’s just a vodka and tonic you want, that’s okay too, but it’s going to be the best one you’ve had because everything – down to the ice in the drink – has been planned.
The spirit selection at The Doggery includes well-known liquors as well as Midwest finds, but don’t look for items such as flavored vodkas. At this bar, fresh fruit will be added to vodka. Also, this is one Minnesota pub that has high end cocktails and craft beers if that’s more your preference. They also carry a couple of wines. The selection of beer and wines rotate. The variety makes it a great date spot.
Events
Check The Doggery’s Facebook page for events at the Rochester pub. Live music takes place a couple of times a week. They also have beer tasting and taping events where brewery representative visit. In conjunction with these you might find some unique beer cocktails on the menu.
Aynsley Jones, formerly a bartender at City Café, created this underground bar in September 2013 and wants to keep the crowds coming. While food is not served here you are welcome to order from local restaurants and bring food in. Just make sure you arrive early as The Doggery can definitely fill up during events.
Location
The Doggery is located at 18 Third Street Southwest in Rochester, Minnesota, in the building that houses Artistic Framers. After you go through the door, head down the stairs until you see what looks like a waiting room with chairs on both sides. You will see Prohibition paintings along the way, but only one will be on a door. That is the door you will use to enter The Doggery.
The Doggery Bar opens at 5:00 pm and typically closes at 1:00 am. It is closed on Sundays. For more information, you can call them at (507) 271-2470.
