- Almost 30 percent of LPNs work in nursing care facilities, where the annual mean salary was $42,320. Almost another 22 percent work in general medical and surgical hospitals, where the mean salary was $39,980. The highest paying industry was employment services, with a mean salary of $46,190.
- The states with the highest annual mean salaries were Connecticut at $52,300, New Jersey at $50,350, Rhode Island at $50,010, California at $49,940 and New Mexico at $49,760. In contrast, the mean salary in Oklahoma was $32,790; Arkansas, $33,750; North Dakota, $34,810; and Tennessee, $35,990.
- The four metropolitan areas with the highest annual mean salaries were all in California: Salinas at $59,670; San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, at $57,150; Oakland-Fremont-Hayward at $57,140; and San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, at $56,920. The fifth highest paying city was Albuquerque, New Mexico, at $56,080. In contrast, the mean salary in Lawton, Oklahoma, was $31,820; Abilene, Texas, was $35,600; and Hot Springs, Arkansas, was $33,680.
- As of December 2010, the salary survey website Payscale.com lists the salary ranges for LPN jobs by years of experience as: less than one year, $27,781 to $39,185; one to four years, $28,711 to $40,112; five to nine years, $30,922 to $44,816; 10 to19 years, $32,327 to $47,185; and 20 years or more, $34,490 to $47,836. This data reflects only current job listings and may not represent LPN salaries as a whole.
