Replacing a Bathroom Vanity Top

    • 1). Turn off the flow of water to the sink's faucet, either by turning the handles located under the sink clockwise or by turning the house's main water valve to the closed position. Turn the faucet on to make sure the flow of water has ceased completely.

    • 2). Place a bucket under the sink and use a pipe wrench to undo the pipe connections under the sink. Use a wrench to loosen the connections that hold the water supply hoses onto the bottom of the sink's faucet.

    • 3). Cut the seal between the sink and the vanity using a utility knife, and then lift the sink out of the vanity. Cut the seal between the vanity top and the bathroom wall, and remove any screws under the vanity that anchor it to the cabinet. Lift the vanity top off the cabinet and set it aside.

    • 4). Apply silicone caulk to the top edge of the bathroom cabinet and the back of the vanity top's backsplash and then place the vanity top onto the cabinet. Apply caulk to the bottom edge of the sink, and then lower it into the hole in the vanity top. Press on the top of the sink and wipe away any caulk that squirts out.

    • 5). Press plumber's putty into the groove on the bottom side of the new faucet's putty plate. Place the putty plate and deck plate over the holes in the back of the sink. Thread the new faucet's parts into the holes in the sink and tighten the retaining nuts on the underside of the sink.

    • 6). Press plumber's putty onto the bottom edge of the sink's drain, then press the drain into the hole in the bottom of the sink. Thread the flange piece onto the bottom of the sink's drain and tighten the locknut onto the drain.

    • 7). Wrap plumber's tape clockwise around the exposed threads on the sink's drain, then tighten the drain pipe onto the drain's threads. Place the stopper into the drain opening, pointing the opening in the bottom of the stopper toward the opening in the drain pipe.

    • 8). Insert the ball end of the pivot rod into the opening in the sink's drain pipe, then slide the retaining nut and washer over the pivot rod and tighten the nut onto the opening in the drain pipe. Insert the other end of the pivot rod into the holes in the spring clip and one of the holes in the clevis strap.

    • 9). Lower the lift rod through the hole in the top of the faucet and insert it into both holes in the "C" shape of the clevis strap. Tighten the screw on the clevis strap to attach it to the lift rod. Tighten the retaining nuts on the water supply lines onto the ports on the bottom of the faucet.
