Crisis Planning for Bipolar Disorder

    Symptoms

    • Know and understand what symptoms mean you're about to hit a manic high or a depressive low so you can write these out for a friend or relative. This needs to be a primary part of a crisis plan so someone else can take responsibility for your needs.

    Needed Phone Numbers

    • Compile a list of helpful phone numbers for the person who will be taking responsibility for your care. These numbers should include friends and family members, a suicide crisis line and your health care providers.

    List of Medications

    • Write up a list of all medications you are taking, whether they are related to to your bipolar disorder or not. Include the correct dosage of each medication.

    Your Treatment Preferences

    • Include a list of your treatment preferences, what medications work for you, who should assume caring for you and who is authorized to make decisions on your behalf while you are unable to do so.

    Reality Checks

    • Print this section in red: "I will not try to make major decisions when I am in a manic state, when my thoughts are racing and I feel invincible". Draw up a medical power of attorney for the times when a manic or depressive episode incapacitates you.
