State Funded Drug Treatment Programs in Illinois

    Treatments

    • The Department of Human Services in Illinois has designed a comprehensive public drug treatment and rehabilitation program that is designed to be modified as necessary based on each person's sex, age, culture and specific drug dependency issues. In addition to having programs for those who are already addicted to substances, also has programs in effect for those at risk of becoming dependent upon drugs or alcohol. The state's system, dubbed "The integrated substance abuse delivery system," was delegated to the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) and is run in conjunction with the Office of Prevention within the Division of Health and Prevention. These offices are responsible for preventing, intervening and treating alcohol and drug dependency and addiction.

    Why

    • The DASA was created because of the belief that substance abuse contributes to the degradation of society at all levels and that preventing substance abuse combined with helping those afflicted can help to make the state of Illinois a better place to live.

    What Services

    • The DASA offers several treatment services that are provided at either low or no cost. Each of these services is provided at the discretion of the DASA through substance-abuse treatment centers and organizations throughout the state. The focus of the program is to match those dependent on substances to the best treatment. In addition, some DASA-financed services include child care, case management, intervention, detox, outpatient substance-abuse treatment and services, HIV testing and counseling, early intervention and residential rehabilitation. These services are generally tax-payer funded and more often than not available at numerous locations throughout Illinois.
