Turn the main breaker and circuit breakers to the "off" position.

Plug the generator cord into the transfer switch or inlet box set up by the electrician.

Turn on the generator. Give it a few minutes to warm up.

Flip the breaker and circuits you need to power to the generator position. Avoid overloading the generator by only using the circuits you need.
