- 1). Check the light bulb to see if it's screwed in properly. An energy-efficient light bulb will not light up if it's not correctly lined up with the threads inside the socket. Turn the lamp off and gently grasp the bulb from the top. Twist it clockwise until it's free of the socket, then reinsert it and turn it counter-clockwise until secure. To avoid breaking the bulb, do not overtighten.
- 2). Look at the package the light bulb came in. Some energy-efficient light bulbs are only designed for specific uses. For example, some cannot be used in sockets that require the bulb to be hung upside down. Other bulbs on the market are designed only for outdoor use, or are designed to go in sockets controlled with dimmer switches. Ensure the bulb is in the correct type of light socket.
- 3). Ensure you have the amount of wattage required by your lamp to match the wattage on the light bulb. A lamp that requires no more than 75 watts will not handle a 100-watt light bulb. Many energy-efficient bulbs have two ratings, for example, one will throw off 100-watts of light, but only require 75 watts of power. As long as the power wattage measurement matches the maximum rating of the lamp, it will work. Otherwise, you will have to replace the bulb with one that requires less watts.
