Avoiding Home Burglary
Many intruders look for an easy hit- a house they can break into quickly; therefore, a more secured home will be a home that is less attractive to a burglar. Most burglars enter the home by the rear or side door; most burglaries occur during daytime hours and most burglars look for ground level homes. Let's take a look at a few ways to secure you home.
Locks
High security locks, which have two cylinders, are a good choice for your entry doors into your home. All locks on your home should be quality locks and functioning, as well as the locks on your windows.
Exterior door can be kicked in and, therefore, should be installed with a quality dead bolt with no less than 1 ½ inch throws on the bolts. Deadbolts should be covered by a wrap-around steel place on the door. The bolts in the locks should be solid, not hollow metal. Door frames should have a metal strike plate that is installed with no less than six, three inch screws.
For wooden frame window, create a lock, which can be done by drilling two holes at the bottom or top of the frame perpendicular to the sash or at a slight, downward angle. You'll need to drill entirely through the sash and halfway into the outside sash. Then place bolts or nails in the holes.
Also, as a safety precaution, a peephole should be installed in the front door. This allows you to look at the identity of the person before you open the door.
Landscape
Trees and shrubs should be trimmed back away from doors and windows so a burglar cannot conceal himself while attempting to break into the home.
Lights
Criminals normally look for homes where no one is home; therefore, reduce the risk of burglar by having room lights on timers and on the outside of your home, have motion lights installed in entry areas to the home.
Hide Your Identity
Don't have your name on your front door or mailbox.
Dogs
Dogs are a wonderful deterrent to a burglar; however, dogs are a big responsibility and homeowners need to be sure they are ready for the responsibility of a dog before they make them a new addition to their home.
Valuables
Don't have valuables in plain view of windows. Inside the home, have a safe to keep jewelry, etc. Also, use an engraving pen to mark valuable items with your personal identifying information, like your name or initials.
Security Alarms and Surveillance Devices
Security alarms and surveillance devices are wonderful at discouraging burglars from entering your home or business as there is more chance of the burglar being caught. If your budget doesn't allow for the purchase and installation of a security system, then consider purchasing a few fake cameras that look real and will discourage thieves. Many of the cameras are so well made they look as though they are the real thing.
No property owner should overlook the importance of security.
