- 1). Soak a piece of string with lemon juice or citrus oil and set this string across any entrance point the ant may find to the home, such as a crack in a window sill. The smell of the lemon juice or oil will repel the ant and keep it from entering the structure.
- 2). Set out several crushed mint leaves near any points of entry into the home. The mint will repel the ants, keeping them at bay.
- 3). Sprinkle a thin layer of diatomaceous earth around the perimeter of the structure and onto outdoor window sills. The ants will consume the substance, which is composed of the fossilized remains of hard-shelled algae and will die.
- 4). Turn on a low-wattage nightlight for two to three nights a week at the point where there is any activity in the home. The change in light will confuse the ants, sending them back outdoors.
- 5). Cut up an unpeeled cucumber into several thin slices and place each slice near any entrance points to the home. Ants have a natural dislike of the cucumber's smell and will stay away.
