How to Keep Animals From Getting in Trash Cans

    • 1). Find some short bungee cords to tightly fasten your garbage can lids to the cans themselves. Cords that are about one foot in length and that have hooks on both ends will work for most garbage can sizes. These can be purchased at most hardware stores. When you take out your next bag of garbage, put the lid on the trash can and fasten it in place with two bungee cords. The best way to do this is to place the hook on one end of a cord around one of the can's handles and then stretch the cord across the lid, fastening the other hook to the handle on the opposite side.

    • 2). Pour some ammonia into a plastic spray bottle. Spray the lid of each can with ammonia once or twice every evening. The odor of the ammonia will mask the smell of the garbage, reducing the number of animals lured in by the scent. Those that do get close enough to smell the trash will be deterred by the smell of the ammonia.

    • 3). If the animals that disturb your garbage frequently tip your trash cans completely over, you may be able to anchor them in place by setting a cinder block on top of each can's lid.

    • 4). If the wind tends to blow from one direction near your house, place the cans on the opposite side of the house. This will block the cans from the wind, preventing the scent of the garbage from spreading and attracting pests from afar.
