- Adams, son of John Adams, is one of two presidents whose fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. (The other president being William Henry Harrison, the ninth president and son of signer Benjamin Harrison--not to be confused with descendant Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president.) Adams also was a secretary and interpreter for the United States envoy to Russia when he was 14.
- Adams was fond of swimming naked in the Potomac River. He kept silkworms and an alligator as pets and was the first president to be photographed. Adams is also the first president to install a billiards table in the White House.
- When Adams was inaugurated, he became the first president whose father also served in the post. At the time of his inauguration, all of the former presidents were alive, with the exception of George Washington.
- Adams was considered a sloppy dresser and was known to have worn the same hat for 10 years.
- The House of Representatives appointed Adams to their body in 1824, where he served for 17 years until his death. He remains the only president to have a post in the House after serving as president.
