How to Make a Perfume Project

    Project Preparation

    • 1). Select a type of ethyl alcohol you are comfortable with using. For personal use, vodka can be used. However, you can't sell perfumes that contain vodka without a license. Otherwise, using ethyl rubbing alcohol, which is found in most drug stores, is adequate.

    • 2). Choose a wide range of essential oils for your perfume creation projects. Essential oils are the distilled oils from natural plant materials, and therefore each one varies in scent and texture tremendously. From lavender and citronella to tea tree and vanilla, keeping a variety of essential oils on hand keeps your perfume projects creative.

    • 3). Select a few fragrance oils with interesting scents that can't be found naturally to supplement your essential oil collection. These scents include bubblegum, cotton candy or impostor type scents based on designer colognes. Unlike essential oils, fragrance oils aren't natural, but some can contain naturally derived ingredients.

    • 4). Keep separate glass mixing bowls for making perfume. Glass mixing bowls are useful for mixing different oil blends to formulate your perfume recipes. Plastic pipettes are also needed. Keep assorted perfume bottles to package your projects.

    Basic Recipe Project

    • 1). Add one oz. of ethyl alcohol to a glass perfume bottle. Use a four oz. bottle.

    • 2). Add a half oz. of polysorbate 20, which binds oil and water ingredients.

    • 3). Add an oz. of floral hydrosol. Depending on the scent you want to create, choices include lavender, rose, peppermint and many others.

    • 4). Mix a one oz. blend of essential oils in a glass dish. For example, a half oz. of lavender and a half oz. of sandalwood essential oil creates a sultry and warm scent.

    • 5). Suck up the oil with a plastic pipette. Inject it into the perfume bottle containing the rest of the ingredients. Secure the lid and shake it vigorously for a whole minute. Let it settle for about an hour before use.
