- 1). Tap out the time signature, which gives you the number of beats in the measure and the type of note in the measure. For example, 4/4 time indicates that there are four beats in the measure and that each is a quarter note. This is a standard time signature that you count as "one, two, three, four."
- 2). Use a metronome. Set it to a tempo that is comfortable or slow when beginning. Practice a simple melody, and focus on hitting the notes exactly in time with meter of the metronome. If you can hear the metronome ticking while you play, it is likely that you've gone out of time. Increase the speed of the metronome as you improve.
- 3). Count out loud as you play. Poor timing can be the result of lapsed concentration. If you are focusing on the melodic element of the music, it is only natural that your timing may slip. Count two bars and then begin. Counting focuses your attention to the rhythmical structure of the piece you are playing.
- 4). Slow down to half time. Sloppy timing can be disguised by speed. As you glide rapidly across the piano keyboard, your timing indiscretions may go unnoticed. Playing your practice repertoire at half time highlights any weaknesses in your timing. If you have struggled to identify why certain pieces sound weak or lack impact, half time playing highlights any timing flaws.
- 5). Record yourself on your cell phone or Dictaphone. Perform the first four measures of a piece and then listen to the playback. Identify any notes that went out of time, and correct them. Move on to the next four measures when you perfectly have played the first four four times. Once you've mastered the second four measures, perfectly play both sections together four times before adding the next section.
