Top 10 New Rap Albums for September 2010

With fall right around the corner, let's explore the albums that will serve as the soundtrack of the season. This month's Top 10 features new albums by Joe Budden, Rah Digga, and Jeezy.

10. DOOM (MF Doom) - 'Expektoration...Live'

I know what you're thinking: Why is DOOM dropping yet another live album? Your guess is as good as mine. DOOM has been under attack for allegedly using impostors at his concerts. Is this his way of making amends to fans? Regardles, it should be interesting to hear what he's been cooking up all these years.

9. Joe Budden - 'The Great Escape'

Joe Budden dropped a book of lyrics on us earlier in August. Next up is The Great Escape, the final piece in a 4-album series that include Halfway House, Padded Room and Escape Route. The Great Escape symbolizes Budden's escape from a sense of constriction that has plagued a good portion of his career.

8. Ski Beatz - '24 Hour Karate School'

Ski has helped a lot of rappers craft some of the best songs of their careers. Now he calls them up to return the favor on 24 Hour Karate School, which features Mos Def on four tracks. Other guest artists are Jean Grae, Curren$y, and Ras Kass.

7. Big L - '139 & Lenox'

For hip-hop heads who want an education on Big L's style, The Big Picture is a good place to start. But those hungry for more material from the late MC might appreciate 139 & Lenox, a compilation of rare Big L songs. (Yes, this is an August release. So I made an exception for an iconic MC. Sue me.)

6. Group Home - 'Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal'

Forget tribute songs, Group Home is making a tribute album in honor of late Gang Starr Foundation member Guru. For all you younguns, the album title spells out Guru's moniker. Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal will feature guest vocals from Jeru The Damaja, Lord Jamar, and an unreleased Guru cut. Group Home, which consists of Lil Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker, frequently collaborated with Guru and DJ Premier in the 90s.

5. Trae - 'Can't Ban tha Truth'

Trae tha Truth is the Houston rapper who got banned by Radio One for some inexplicable reason. Rather than put his tail behind him and kowtow to the establishment, Trae locked himself in the studio and buried his head in his rhyme book. The outcome is Can't Ban tha Truth, an album that promises to be as dark and vicious as anything he's done in the past.

4. Black Milk - 'Album of the Year'

Remember when Black Milk was the hottest emerging producer in the game? Now that Boi-1da has snatched that title from him, Black Milk needed a bold move to rise above the fray. He may have found it in the form of an incredibly ballsy album title: Album of the Year. But it's making a bold proclamation is one thing. If the leaked songs are any indication, a self-fulling prophecy may be on the horizon.

3. Jeezy - 'TM 103'

Thug Motivation 103 is Jeezy's fourth solo album, his first under the Young-less moniker. Each of Jeezy's first three albums has reached at least Gold status. With his Plies-assisted single "Lose My Mind" still burning up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, I expect TM 103 to follow suit. Of course Lil Wayne is on this album. Every rap album released in 2010 is required to have a verse from Wayne.

2. Rah Digga - 'Classic'

What's with all these ballsy hip-hop album titles? First Black Milk, now Rah Digga wants us to believe she's made a classic album? Whatever happened to humility? Oh, never mind, this is rap we're talking about. Anyway, Digga goes in on this album. She's killing every femcee in the game right now. More importantly, she's made one hell of an album.

1. The Roots (w/ John Legend) - 'WAKE UP!'

The Roots and John Legend join forces to inject new life into a batch of soulful hits on their upcoming collaborative effort. Wake Up! is light on guest appearances, but Canadian singer Melanie Fiona and Chicago wordsmith Common and Melanie Fiona make cameos on the album. Wake Up! takes on such classics as Marvin Gaye's "Wholy Holy" and Donny Hathaway's "Little Ghetto Boy."
