- Each time you dump food down the drain, there's the chance that some particles get left behind and stuck in the pipes. Over time, these pieces of food rot and collect mold and bacteria. Bacteria are living organisms, and like humans, they eat and create waste. The waste that's created by the bacteria could be the smell coming from your drain.
- The good news about smelly drains is that they're fairly easy to fix. All you will need to execute the process of cleaning your drain naturally is 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of white vinegar, a pair of oven mitts and a large pot. You can also get a lemon for added freshness if you want.
- Boil a large pot of hot water on your stove. Add 1 cup of baking soda to your drain followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait several minutes for the solution to expand and clean the drain of bacteria and food particles. Put on your oven mitts and then pour the boiling water down the drain -- slowly and carefully -- to wash the solution down. Your drain should now be clear and free of odor.
- So your drain is clean and odor free, but now you want to keep it that way. The first thing you can do is dispose of your leftover food into the garbage can instead of the sink. This will prevent leftover particles from rotting and attracting bacteria. If you do use your garbage disposal, though, remember to run very hot water down the drain after each time. You can also maintain the drain's cleanliness by adding either a tablespoon of baking soda or a cup of white vinegar down the drain once a week.
