- Dairy products can aggravate acne in many individuals. If you must drink milk or consume dairy products, buy certified organic products. You'll still be exposed to the naturally occurring hormones in milk, but you won't be exposed to the extra hormones cows are given that are present in conventional dairy products.
- Avoid "junk foods" and other sweet foods. Sugar doesn't directly cause acne, but sugar does deplete the immune system. An overtaxed immune system is linked to skin conditions, including acne.
- Avoid sugary beverages. In addition to the immune-depleting effect of sugar, when you're consuming soda and other sugary drinks, usually you're drinking less water, too. Drinking sufficient water is necessary for maintaining clear, healthy skin.
- Limit spicy foods such as cayenne and red peppers and tomato products. These foods don't cause acne, but they can increase circulation, including blood flow to the face, which can increase redness.
- While you might not clear your acne completely through dietary measures alone, it's worth the effort to eat healthy. Realize that it might take two months or more to see a noticeable improvement from dietary changes alone.
