- The main goal of overseas security training is to make aware to U.S. security forces and their families threats that may be present in their country of duty. The U.S. Department of State offers training seminars that educate students about the political, criminal and terrorist threats that the student may be exposed to.
- The Department of State's Foreign Service Institute offers training for U.S. citizens who are deployed to a foreign country. The tuition as of 2010 is $530 for a four-day course called "Serving Abroad for Families and Employees." A one-day, yearly refresher course is required after the initial courses have been passed.
- Some overseas security jobs have a language component. This is sometimes separate from the security training but sometimes it is up to the potential student to learn the language on his own.
