- 1). Complete an accredited teaching program and earn a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited in the state of North Carolina. This helps you learn the necessary skills to become a teacher in the state. You must pass the Praxis I and II exams before you are officially certified as a teacher.
- 2). Acquire a certification as a literary specialist. Passing the the Praxis 0204 examination is the most direct route to certification. You can study on your own for the test, and there are numerous resources available to help you. The Praxis 0204 is a specialty exam that covers only materials related to the literary specialist designation; it does not test you on additional information you learned as an undergraduate. You can take this examination only after you are fully certified as a teacher in North Carolina. The examination is offered regularly at testing centers throughout the state. Give yourself at least a month of study time to adequately prepare.
- 3). Complete an M.A.Ed. in Reading Education or Literary Education. These programs usually last two years and cover various methodologies and teaching techniques that are vital to work as a literacy specialist. You need a master's degree if you want to do advanced work in the field, and having a master's can help you earn a higher salary. You don't need a master's degree to work as a literacy specialist in an entry-level position.
