Advice for How to Sell a Car

    Write a List of Features

    • One of the first things you should do when you plan to sell a car is to write down all of the special features of your car besides the standard ones that are true for every other car like yours. For instance, if you just put brand new tires or wheels on the car, your potential buyers are going to want to know that. If you added a sunroof, stereo system or even something as simple as new wiper blades, be sure to list that as well.

    Clean Your Car

    • Before you invite someone out to look at your car, take a day to wash and detail it. Remove all of your junk from the car, and remove all of the grease and stickiness from inside. Shake some baking soda around the inside and then vacuum it out to remove any undesirable smells. If at all possible, pick a nice day weather-wise to show the car. Wash and wax the exterior so that when the prospective buyer pulls up it is gleaming in the sunlight.

Price it Slightly Higher Than What You'll Accept

    • Decide on the price that you will be willing to accept for your used car. Then set your listing price at $500 to $1,000 above that. This way, you will have some negotiating room if the buyer is interested but wants a better price.

    Work on Your Sales Pitch

    • If you're not familiar with selling a car, you've got to work a little on your sales pitch. You should not try to be like the stereotypical used car salesman, with tricks and exaggerated claims. Instead, just be calm, relaxed and truthful about the condition of the car. Memorize the top five features of the car that your prospective buyer would be interested in, and then point those out to him when you're talking. Tell a little story about your experience using the car, such as a time when your vehicle was able to make it up a very steep hill effortlessly, or its ability to reach high speeds very quickly.

Offer a Free Vehicle History Report

    • Many car buyers are adamant about getting a vehicle history report (offered by CarFax.com) before purchasing a car, especially from a private seller. Offer to pay for a vehicle history report to be pulled up online if the shopper is definitely interested in the car. It costs anywhere from $15 to $40, and your potential buyer likely will appreciate the gesture.

    Meet in a Neutral Location

    • Additionally, you should decide on a neutral location where you will meet people to look at the car and take it for a test drive. For instance, in front of a repair shop or at the park. This way, these strangers will not have your home address this early in the process.
