- 1). Put your topic sentence at the beginning of the paragraph. Since it is an introduction to your supporting information, place it before your supporting information. Write your topic sentence first and then put the rest of your paragraph after it.
- 2). Place the subject of your paragraph at the very beginning of your topic sentence. If your paragraph is about commercial airplanes, then the words "commercial airplanes" should be within the first few words of your topic sentence, preferably the first. If your paragraph is about black cats, then the words" black cats" should come within the first few words of your sentence.
- 3). Follow the subject with the main idea or claim that you are making. If you are writing an essay on the high costs of building commercial airplanes, then your subject would be "commercial airplanes" and your main idea would be "are very costly to build" creating the topic sentence "Commercial airplanes are very costly to build." If you are writing an essay on the history of superstitions surrounding black cats, then your subject would be "black cats" and your main idea would be "have been surrounded by superstition for centuries" creating the topic sentence "Black cats have been surrounded by superstition for centuries."
- 4). Support your topic sentence with the rest of your paragraph. For example, in the commercial airplane essay, you could follow your topic sentence with industry statistics on how much it costs for labor and materials to build a commercial airplane. For the black cats essay, you could list the specific superstitions related to black cats and the time period from which they originated.
