- 1). Don't smoke inside your home. Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes people make is smoking or living with a relative who smokes inside the home. Cigarette smoke itself is enough to trigger an allergy attack. Over time, the tar particles and carbon monoxide can also build on your walls, ceiling, floors and furniture making for an allergen-enriched environment. If you or someone in your household has allergies or asthma and are living with someone who is a smoker, encourage him to go outside and smoke.
- 2). Keep furniture and floors cleaned often. Over time, dirt, dust particles and dust mites can build up on your furniture and deep in your carpets. These allergens can make for a long battle with allergies. It is advised that you vacuum your carpet and dust your furniture regularly. Also have your mattresses cleaned once or twice per month and have your carpets professionally cleaned at least three times per year.
- 3). Clean carpet spills immediately. Sometimes when liquid spills onto carpets, people tend to only clean the surface of the carpet instead of cleaning deep into the matting of the carpet. This negligence over time can cause mold to develop underneath carpeting. Mold particles can break off and become airborne spores that negatively affect allergies. When you spill something, be sure that you fully clean up the spillage. Purchasing any type of high powered vacuum that is especially made for home allergy treatment and that can suck liquids from the carpet would be a great idea.
- 4). Run a humidifier in your home. Sometimes cleaning your furniture and floors sometimes isn't good enough. These methods are not totally preventive against airborne allergens. Running a good humidifier in your home will lessen the amount of allergens in the air. These appliances work by removing allergens like dust and smoke particles from the air with a filter built in and the humidifier then replaces this contaminated air with fresh air. Keep in mind, if you want the humidifier to be effective, you need to replace the filter every 30 to 60 days.
