Ideal Places for Koi Ponds

    • Koi require sun and shade to thrive; position your pond accordingly.koi pond image by MPH from Fotolia.com

Koi ponds create an exotic and relaxing environment that most people would enjoy. They can be designed in many shapes and sizes, and are a beautiful addition to any landscape. Koi ponds can be set up almost anywhere thanks to the variety of heater, filter and pond lining systems currently available. However, as with any large project, there are several factors regarding location to consider before you build a koi pond in your own backyard.

    Sunlight and Shade

    • Pick a site for your koi pond where it will be in the sunlight and shade at different times of day. The amount of sunlight needed for your koi pond depends mainly on the types of plants you choose to grow. Certain aquatic plants require more sunlight than others, but most need at least five hours of sunlight a day.

According to the website, Nishikigoi, koi need sunlight to boost their immune systems, brighten their colors and produce healthier vegetation for their consumption.

    Proximity and Maintenance

    • Locate your koi pond where you will be able to enjoy it. You'll probably want to see the pond from windows, or sit by it in the summer and listen to the trickling of water.

Position your koi pond close to a water source and electrical outlet so it's easy for you to maintain. Your pond will be a stopping point for local critters, according to Natural Resources Conservation Service. Consider the needs of wildlife that will take solace around your pond.

    Interferences

    • Your pond should be free of any tree interference. Trees are wonderful sources of shade and seclusion, but can also create problems for your koi pond. The roots can grow into the area of your pond, causing damage. Also, if the tree drops leaves or other debris into the pond, that will require more upkeep.

Your pond should be built on solid, flat ground. Consider the potential for flooding or wind damage in your area when you choose the location for your koi pond.

    Dangers

    • Koi often jump out of the water, so high walls are needed.japanese koi carp image by Geoff Hobbs from Fotolia.com

Keeping any animal requires knowledge and constant vigilance and koi are no different. Remember that koi are living creatures and their well-being is the most important aspect of your pond.

Predators, such as cats, raccoons and large birds will be attracted to the fish. The pond should be deep and large enough where the fish have room to swim to safety. It should also have high enough walls to prevent them from jumping out or being attacked easily. Vegetation also provides protection from predators, giving the fish a place to hide if necessary.

A fence is another way to keep predators out. It also prevents children from getting too close to a deep pond.
