Munich has one main international airport, Franz Josef Strauss Airport (MUC), that serves the majority of its air transportation needs. There are two much smaller airports located west of the city that serve regional needs within Bavaria, as well as some low-cost airline carriers: Augsburg Muehlhausen Airport (AGB) and Memmingen Allgau Airport (FMM). - Also known as "Munich Airport," Franz Josef Strauss is the second largest airport in Germany after Frankfurt and the seventh largest in Europe in terms of the number of passengers. It is located 28.5 kilometers North-East of the Munich city center. The airport opened in 1992, after transferring operations from the old Munich-Riem Airport which is no longer in use. Construction on Terminal 2 was completed in 2003. Munich Airport currently serves about 50 million passengers per year, and construction of a third terminal is planned.
Munich Airport can be accessed by train, bus, or car. It is connected to the city's S-Bahn train system. For those with layovers in the airport, there is a large and very highly rated shopping and restaurant pavilion. There is an airport at the hotel that is run by Kempinski, as well as numerous other options in the surrounding area.
