- 1). Look near the back of your car insurance policy for the conditions of the policy. This will tell you how to comply with the terms and conditions of your policy in the event of an accident. If you fail to comply with the requirements, you can lose some or all of your rights under the terms of the policy.
- 2). Read the cover sheet of your car insurance policy, sometimes called the declarations page, that describes the type of coverage you have and the deductibles.
- 3). Find and read the part of your car insurance policy that goes over what’s called the insuring agreement. This explains what your car insurance policy is protecting you against, such as injury, death and types of property damage.
- 4). Write down all the details about the accident. If another car was involved in the accident, include any information you got from the other driver. Record the names of any police, fire, or emergency personnel that were called to the scene of the accident. Make a map of the accident for use in court. You may not remember details.
- 1). Submit your car insurance claim to your insurance company.
- 2). Provide all the details you have about the accident to the car insurance claim adjuster when he or she calls or visits you.
- 3). Follow-up with your claims adjuster after you have filed your car insurance claim. Often car insurance claims adjusters have a large number of claims to process. To have your claim processed in the shortest amount of time possible, you’ll want to keep your claim in the adjuster's mind. Call or email about once every two weeks and ask for a status update. Ask your adjuster if she needs any more information.
