- 1). Find and purchase a power inverter for your laptop. For most laptops, inverters that provide between 140 and 250 watts of power are adequate. Get one with a cigarette lighter adapter to make it easier to connect and use.
- 2). Switch your car's ignition to the "Off" position.
- 3). Plug the small end of the cigarette lighter adapter cable into the power port on the inverter. Plug the large end of the cable into an empty cigarette lighter in your vehicle.
- 4). Place the inverter on the floorboard or an empty seat in your vehicle. Ensure the inverter is secure and won't move or bounce around while driving your vehicle.
- 5). Connect the AC adapter to your laptop computer. Plug the power cord for the AC adapter into one of the electrical outlets on the power inverter.
- 6). Start your vehicle's ignition.
- 7). Turn on the laptop and use it as you normally would or allow the inverter to charge the laptop battery.
