- 1). Click the Windows "Start" button then "Internet Explorer." Click the "Tools" button. Click "Internet Options."
- 2). Select the "General" tab to see your browser home page. Click the "Settings" button under "Browsing History," "Search" and "Tabs" to see the settings for each of those. Click "Colors," "Languages," "Fonts" and "Accessibility" to see how these settings determine the appearance of your browser.
- 3). Select the "Security" tab to see your security settings. Security settings are divided into four zones: "Internet," "Local Intranet," "Trusted Sites" and "Restricted Sites." Click any of these icons to see the security settings for each zone. You can use the default security levels, which are low, medium and high, or customize the levels by clicking the "Customize Level" button for each zone.
- 4). Select the "Privacy" tab to see your privacy settings, which restrict website cookies access to your computer. Click the "Settings" button in the "Pop-up Blocker" section to see those settings.
- 5). Select the "Content" tab to see settings for Parental Controls, Content Advisor, Certificates, AutoComplete and Feeds.
- 6). Select the "Connections" tab to see Setup Internet connections, dial-up and Virtual Private Network (VPN) settings and Local Area Network (LAN) settings.
- 7). Select the "Programs" tab to see whether or not Internet Explorer is your default browser and what add-ons have been added. This tab also shows you what programs the browser will open for email, newsgroups, Internet calls, your calendar and contact list.
- 8). Select the "Advanced" tab to see which of the dozens of advanced features have been enabled or disabled in Internet Explorer. These settings range from automatically checking for Internet Explorer updates to enabling third-party browser extensions.
