Many couples opt to include their children in a second wedding ceremony to symbolize the blending of their two families. In return, children can give wedding gifts to their parents to demonstrate their acceptance of and affection for new family members. A grandparent or other relative may need to help a younger child prepare an appropriate gift, but older children may prove quite capable of creating gifts on their own. - Combine photographs from the two families into a memory scrapbook. Find common interests or shared hobbies to use as themes for the pages. Children can add pictures of each family member, including extended relatives and pets. Mix candid snapshots and formal portraits to display a range of special events such as a preschool graduation, a championship ballgame or a camping trip. Leave room to add a future family portrait on the final page.
- Some children, particularly teenagers, are more computer savvy than their parents. Children can help create a wedding website that includes information about the ceremony and reception. The website could also feature driving directions, links to gift registries and a virtual guestbook. With parental permission, children can upload pictures from the wedding for guests to view.
- Children can request a list of their parents' favorite songs and compile them into a music mix. The newly married couple could play the songs during the wedding reception or wait and listen to the tunes later at home. Older children may be able to create a DVD containing a slide show of wedding pictures set to the music mix.
- Planting a tree can symbolize the beginning of a new family. With time and care, the tree will grow and develop strong roots, just as each person grows individually but is rooted in the family. Children can present the tree seedling in a small, hand-painted pot or in a decorative candleholder. Help children choose a tree suitable for the climate and soil so that it will thrive when transplanted.
