It's said that 75% of women have suffered from a vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lives.
Yeast infections are caused by a fungus called candida albicans and occur when yeast's natural environment becomes less acidic, prompting the fungus to overgrow.
Some reasons your body's acidic balance may change include:
- menstruation
- some antibiotics
- excess moisture and/or irritation
- pregnancy
- diabetes
- obesity
- leukemia or HIV
Some of the symptoms you may experience include:
- itching and burning
- swelling
- burning or pain during urination
- white, cottage cheese-like discharge
- discomfort during sex
It's not uncommon for other vaginal infections, like gardnerella, gonorrhea or trichomonas, to mimic the symptoms of yeast infections.
Your ob/gyn or physician will perform a pelvic exam to ascertain the presence of yeast and your doctor may prescribe a prescription medication, but most likely will recommend an over-the-counter vaginal anti-fungal medication like Monistat 7.
Be sure and follow the directions for any medications and complete the course of treatment in order to rid your body of the yeast.
Besides prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, you can also try a natural remedy for yeast infection, which is better for your body and your pocketbook! A well-known home remedy for yeast infection uses plain yogurt containing lactobacillus acidophilus, either topically as a cure or orally as a prevention measure.
Buttermilk, tea tree oil, honey and garlic are some other natural remedies frequently applied to cure yeast infections.
To help prevent yeast infections, avoid tight-fitting clothes, remove wet swimsuits or clothes immediately, and wear cotton-paneled panties.
It's also recommended that you thoroughly dry your vaginal area after showers and swimming before getting dressed.
