- Instead of just removing the article of clothing and throwing it in the laundry to deal with later, take care of it immediately. If you don't want permanent stains, work quickly. Use a butter knife or spoon to scrape the top layer of the fabric and remove any excess salad oil. Sprinkle baby powder on the spot to do the same thing---sop up the oil.
- Apply a few drips of liquid dish soap directly to the spot. The detergent will emulsify the salad oil and make is easy to rinse away. After you apply the detergent, work it into the fabric to loosen any bits of oil clinging to the fibers of the cloth. Allow the soap to sit for about 15 minutes.
- Wash the fabric with the hottest water possible for the garment you are washing. It will lift the emulsified oil away from the fabric and into the water. You can either do this by hand or in a clothes washing machine. Rinse the fabric until the water runs clear. Check for any remaining stain and repeat the washing process if necessary.
