- 1). Unplug the refrigerator from the wall. This will allow it time to defrost if there is any excess ice buildup in the freezer.
- 2). Remove the contents of the refrigerator before moving. Throw away any unwanted or expired items. Place any usable food or beverages into an alternate refrigerator as quickly as possible.
- 3). Clean the inside of the refrigerator with an all-purpose household cleaner and paper towels, including the shelves, any baskets or drawers. Wipe out the fridge with a dry towel. This will help remove any moisture from the refrigerator that could promote the growth of mold while the unit is in storage.
- 4). Place the refrigerator upright onto a moving dolly. Avoid carrying the refrigerator to the new location or placing the refrigerator on its side during transport. This can cause the compressor oil to shift to the unit's filter, where it can become trapped.
- 5). Set the unit inside the designated storage area. The unit should either be placed with the door facing the wall or with a large object in front of the unit to keep the door closed. This will ensure that no small children or animals can become trapped inside of the refrigerator.
- 6). Plug the refrigerator into the wall for two to three hours, every two months. This will ensure that the unit's compressor remains lubricated.
