- 1). Wash a glass quart jar with slanted shoulders with water and soap. Let the glass jar dry.
- 2). Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the inside surface of the shoulder of the jar. This makes the shoulder slippery so the roaches will not be able to climb out of the jar once they get in.
- 3). Place bait in the bottom of the jar to lure roaches. Cut banana peels so you get a square piece with 2-inch sides. Otherwise, fold a piece of paper towel to form a small square, place half a teaspoon of sugar on it and 1 teaspoon of water to dissolve the sugar into the paper towel. The roaches will smell the bait and crawl into the jar.
- 4). Wrap a piece of paper towel around the outside surface of the glass jar and secure it with sticky tape to help roaches climb up. Oriental roaches can't climb a glass surface and the paper towel will help them enter the trap.
- 5). Place the trap near areas where you find evidence of roach infestation, such as exoskeletons, egg cases and roach droppings. Trapped roaches left in the jar will attract more roaches. If you have large numbers of roaches, they will come even without any bait in the jar.
- 6). Place the lid on the jar and place it in the freezer for a few hours if you want to kill the roaches. Discard dead roaches in an outdoor trash can.
