How to Refinish Water Stained Oak Flooring

    • 1). Removing everything you can from the room, including furniture and rugs. Seal all doorways by covering them with plastic sheeting attached with masking tape. Cover duct registers and seal cabinet doors with plastic and masking tape. Open a window for ventilation.

    • 2). Rent a 16-inch floor polisher. Buy 60- to 120-grit disks to attach to the bottom of the floor polisher. Sand down the disks before attaching them to the polisher with 100-grit sandpaper. This will rub off any high spots that can scratch your floor.

    • 3). Attach the grit disk to the bottom of the floor polisher. Plug in the polisher, turn it on, and push it across the surface of your oak floor. Start on one side of the room and go back and forth across the room, overlapping the area you just polished. Make sure that the whole floor is polished.

    • 4). Sweep off the wood dust from the walls and vacuum all the dust from the area.

    • 5). Apply a polyurethane finish to the screened floors. On the open areas of the floor, use a synthetic-wool applicator to apply the finish. Use a painting pad to apply the finish along the edges and in the corners. Hold the applicator at a slight angle and move the applicator across the floor, moving in the direction of the grain of the wood.

    • 6). Wait an hour for the first coat of finish to dry. Apply a second coat if desired.
