- 1). Wearing gloves, fill a dish with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Place the brass in the soapy water and scrub with a soft-bristle toothbrush. If you cannot soak your brass, wipe it with a soapy wash cloth. This will clean your brass and remove dirt and debris before you attempt to polish it.
- 2). Rinse the soapy water from your brass with cold water. Dry it with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- 3). Squirt a dime-sized amount of ketchup onto your brass item. Rub the ketchup over the surface of the brass with a rag.
- 4). Wipe the ketchup off the brass with a damp wash cloth. Buff the brass dry with a microfiber cloth.
- 5). Mix 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 cup of vinegar in a small mixing bowl. Add flour slowly until you have made a paste. Apply this mixture to brass that is still tarnished after the ketchup treatment.
- 6). Allow the paste to sit on the tarnished brass between 10 and 30 minutes. Check it by wiping away a small portion. If the brass is still tarnished re-cover that area and let it sit for longer.
- 7). Rinse the brass under clean water when the tarnish is gone. Buff it dry with a microfiber cloth.
