You may love your cat, but that love is tested when your cat begins to spray urine all over your home. Cats usually spray in response to stress. The smell can be quite awful and difficult to eliminate with store-bought cleaning supplies. A variety of commercial products of varying effectiveness are available at pet stores and groceries, but the best cleaning supplies for cat urine are probably already in your pantry. - A mixture of one part white vinegar to three parts water will neutralize the odor. Use slightly more vinegar for a stronger smell or stain. Cat urine contains ammonia, which is extremely acidic. Vinegar, which is basic, will cancel out the ammonia, leaving salt and water. Spray the solution on the stain and let it sit for roughly five minutes.
- A tablespoon of baking soda drizzled over the stain where you applied vinegar is also helpful. Baking soda, which is a base solution, neutralizes strong odors remaining from the vinegar and cat urine, and also absorbs moisture.
- Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly chemical used to bleach organic stains. A mixture of three-quarters of a cup of hydrogen peroxide and one tbsp. dish soap should be poured over the baking powder and used to scrub the remaining stain. If you are treating a porous surface you should test the hydrogen peroxide mixture on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it won't become discolored.
