- 1). Measure from 1 inch below the top of your mattress up to your desired headboard height and approximately 2 inches wider than the mattress. Cut the plywood base to size.
- 2). Place the front of the headboard face down on a piece of quilt batting and cut the batting around the headboard, leaving 4 to 6 inches along each edge. Fold those edges over and staple them to the back of the headboard with a staple gun.
- 3). Place the covered side of the headboard face down on the back of a piece of fabric of your choice, then cut along the edges, leaving 4 to 6 inches along each edge. Fold the edges over and staple them to the back of the headboard, top to bottom first, pulling the fabric back firmly as you staple.
- 4). Cut a piece of cotton backing fabric to the size of the headboard. Place the fabric on the back of the headboard and fold under 1 inch along the edges. Staple the fabric down along the entire edge of the headboard to cover the quilt batting and raw fabric edges.
- 1). Measure the leg length needed by positioning the headboard up against the bed about 1 inch below the top of the mattress. Measure from about 6 inches below the top of the headboard down to the floor. Cut two 1 inch-by-4 inch pine boards to the measured length.
- 2). Measure the distance of the mounting holes in the metal bed frame from its edge to determine where to place the legs on the headboard.
- 3). Attach the legs to the headboard using wood screws that will not go through the front of the board.
- 1). Drill holes in the legs, aligning them with the holes in the metal bed frame.
- 2). Attach the headboard to the frame, securing it with nuts and bolts.
- 3). Check all screws and bolts to ensure that you have a tight, safe structure.
